O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Psalm 8:1 NIV)
Those wonderful words from Psalm 8 set the stage for one of the best known praise and worship songs of recent times - made famous, of course, by the hit contemporary Christian song from the 1980s by Sandi Patty.
They also set the stage for an interesting discussion about the name of our Lord. The verse says, "LORD, our Lord"... what is the difference between "LORD" and "Lord" as it pertains here to God? Why is it written this way?
Proverbs 18:10 says "The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe." (NIV) Again, why is "LORD" written thus?
If the name of the LORD is a strong tower, there must be considerable power in that name, but does God really have a personal name? Believe it or not, he does. We don't often speak it and most English translators have determined to put it into our modern English translations as "LORD". However, scripture does record God's personal name. It is in these as well as many other passages of scripture.
In this week's sermon, we learn more about the name of God and how Jesus Christ boldly took on that name for himself, thus identifying himself as being God when he proclaimed in John 8:58 "before Abraham was born, I am!" To listen, click on the link below.
